Off-Site Adoptions

Training requirements for off-site volunteers:

  • Basic cat handling – taking cats in/out of cages

Preparation:

  • Organize files and supplies

  • Sign out cats in Chameleon

  • Make sure all cats are wearing paper collars labeled “YCAS” and Animal ID#

  • Load cats into car

  • Transport cats (in carriers) to off-site location

Materials to gather at shelter:

  • Plastic bin in Front Office, containing:

    • Cat adoption forms

    • Binders with adoptable animals

    • Volunteer opportunity flyers

  • Kennel cards

  • Clean cat toys in a bag

  • Carriers to transport kittens

  • Towels to place in/on cages if cats get overwhelmed

  • Bag of litter and small plastic litter bins (that fit cages) or cardboard litter boxes

  • Cat adoption packets containing the following:

    • Cat adoption handout

    • Each cat’s microchip packet

    • 20/20 Pet Food Express coupon

    • Cat litter coupon

    • Pet Supplies Plus handout

    • Medical booster shot handout

    • Upper respiratory infection handout

    • Printed copy of each cat’s medical record

    • Post-surgery care instruction

Materials to set up at off-site location:

  • Folding tables (~3) and chairs (~4)

  • “Kitten adoptions this way” sign

  • Cat cages (~4)

  • Navy colored bin containing (says YCAS):

    • Donation jar

    • Hand sanitizer

    • Volunteer opportunity flyers

    • Displays

    • Extra towel

    • Food bags for cats/kittens (replace with new bags every few months)

    • Envelope with extra adoption handouts, contracts and forms

    • Plastic water bowl

    • Treats

    • Pens and clipboard

While Offsite:

  • Greet and introduce yourself to staff at off-site location.

  • Remind public to use hand sanitizer before interacting with kittens.

  • If public is acting inappropriately:

    • Kindly ask the public to give the cats a break as they can get overwhelmed.

    • Find the person in charge and notify them of the public member’s behavior.

Payment: We accept cash only and can provide adopters with receipt from receipt book.

Take down at shelter:

  • If a cat was adopted:

  • Give kennel card with all adoption paperwork and cash to Front Office staff before 3:30p.

    1. If no one is in Front Office, place kennel cards on the desk with a note explaining that the dog was adopted and that the money/paperwork is in the kennel card sleeve.

  • Return supplies to proper locations.

  • Return dirty carriers, laundry and toys to laundry.
